Sthira sukham asanam: Asana (posture) should be both
steady and relaxed. "Asana" literally means a seat, although it is applied generally to yoga poses, not only the seated poses. Traditionally, asanas are studied in order to strengthen, tone, and refine the body so that the student can sit comfortably and steadily in meditation. This module will concentrate on developing steadiness and firmness of stance and openness in the hips, through practice of the basic standing and seated poses. In the philosophy section of this module, we will be introduced to Raja Yoga, the "royal" path of meditation which is the partner of Hatha Yoga, the yoga of the body. We explore meditation as the heart of yoga practice, and learn basic meditation, chanting, and breath awareness techniques to help redirect the senses from the demands of the outer world to the world of inner observation. The history of Indian philosophy is introduced, and the viewpoints of the six main schools identified.
