Forward Bends and The Spine


Ishvara-pranidhana-va: Surrendering to a higher power brings perfection in practice.
-Yoga Sutra I:23

Forward bends are poses of surrender: the harder you strive to go deeper, the more your body resists. When you let go, and let the breath and the body’s own intelligence take charge of the process, you find yourself closer to where you were trying to go by sheer force of will. The spine is the axis of our personal worlds, and in it is housed our central nervous systems.

In this module we will begin to observe the effect on the central nervous system of certain types of poses and practices. We will consider "Who is a yogi?", the concept of selfless action, and the nature of ethics in yoga.
