Maitri-karuna muditopeksanam
sukha-dukha-punya-apunya-visayanam bhavanatash chitta prasadanam: By
cultivating friendliness and fellowship toward those who are happy, compassion
and love toward those who are suffering, and neutrality and indifference toward
those who are vicious, the yogi attains peace and happiness of mind. Backbends are extraverted poses, as forward bends are introverted, while twists can take you deep into your core. Both families of poses open the heart (among other things!) In this module we will explore the whole length of the spine through various active and supported twists and backbends, with attention to protecting the low back in the process. Philosophy study will develop the theme of practicing metta, compassion or love, for oneself and others; we will have further discussion of the ethical relationship of teacher and student, and the practice of nonviolence in our lives. We will consider the Yamas and Niyamas as explained in the Yoga Sutra. . Pranayama practice will involve more complex breathing patterns, and students will begin to observe one another’s breathing. Mantra of the month: Anando’ham |
