Yamas / Niyamas

"universal vows": social practices/values unconditioned by time, place, class, or concept of duty

principles for dealing with the outer and inner worlds

channel actions in chosen direction


Yamas Ten Commandments

Ahimsa - nonviolence Thou shalt not kill (6)

Satya – truthfulness Thou shalt not bear false witness (9)

Asteya – non stealing Thou shalt not steal (8)

Brahmacharya – continence Thou shalt not commit adultery (7)

Aparigraha - greedlessness Thou shalt not covet….(10)


Niyamas

Shauca – cleanliness, purity; (external – daily bath; internal – asana, pranayama)

Santosha – contentment; "attitude of gratitude"; sufficiency

Tapas – burning discipline, zeal ; consistency; desire to burn away impurities

Svadhyaya – self-inquiry; study; personal inventory; "Who is the doer?"

Ishvara pranidhana – surrender to the Lord, higher power

Ishtadevata –"chosen deity": god of your understanding
